About Matt

A working performer who teaches.

At his JSU audition, the choral director had every student sing down the scale in front of the whole choir. When Matt kept going — past where most basses stop — she turned to the choir’s established bass anchor, Jason Wright, and said: “Move over, Jason.” The choir laughed. Jason moved. Jason later became the treasurer of the JSU Men’s Chorale that Matt co-founded. That’s the kind of room it was.

Matt is a bass-baritone with a confirmed range of C2–G5, trained classically at Jacksonville State University on a full vocal scholarship. He’s performed in community theater, competed at regional and state NATS levels, sang at the Alabama Governor’s Mansion, and spent 26 years leading worship and choral programs in NE Alabama.

He holds an M.Div from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Prepare/Enrich counseling certification — which means his preaching delivery coaching is informed by both stage technique and ministry context.

Currently actively auditioning for regional theater, including Theatre of Gadsden’s upcoming production of Sweeney Todd (July 2026 auditions).

Questions

Common questions.

Do I need experience to start?

No. Beginners, returning singers, and experienced performers all welcome. Matt adjusts to where you are.

Where do lessons take place?

In-person in the Anniston / Gadsden area, or virtual via Zoom. Recording sessions happen in Matt's home studio setup.

What styles do you teach?

Classical, musical theater, gospel, contemporary Christian, southern gospel, and American standards. Not pop production.

Can you help me record a demo?

Yes. Basic voice demos and audition videos are available as add-ons. Ask at booking.

I'm a pastor — is preaching coaching different from a regular coaching session?

Yes. Preaching coaching is entirely focused on delivery mechanics and ministerial presence. Matt holds an M.Div and has served in ministry for 26 years. No theological content coaching.
